Scott Pratt was a criminal defense attorney in Johnson City, Tennessee, nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. After a career-ending legal dispute left him bankrupt and living in his mother-in-law’s basement, he did the only thing he could: he sat down and wrote a novel.
That novel was An Innocent Client. It earned a starred review from Publishers Weekly and launched a series that would sell over six million copies. Scott poured his life into every page — his wife Kristy’s eleven-year battle with cancer became Caroline Dillard’s fight. His children became Jack and Lilly. The mountains, the courtrooms, the stubborn sense of right and wrong — all of it was real.
Scott passed away in 2018. His son, writing under the pen name J.D. Pratt, now carries the series forward — honoring his father’s legacy while continuing the story of the Dillard family.
